Mining gains make FTSE shine

The FTSE 100 has ended the day up 55.3 points, or 0.84%, to 6,676.7, as a strong start on Wall Street boosted gains by miners.

Vedanta Resources posted the biggest gains with a rise of 4.03% to £15.50, closely followed by Antofagasta which climbed 2.69% to 572.5p, while pub operator Punch Taverns continued to perform well ending 2.6% higher at £13.79. Vodafone also climbed 3.1% to 162.9p, while Johnson Matthey added 2.77% to £16.71, although gains were limited by life company Standard Life which slipped 0.8% to end at 341p. Drax was the biggest loser with a fall of 1.81% to 786p, closely followed by GlaxoSmithKline which dropped 1.37% to £12.92, while Northern Rock fell 1.02% to £10.69, and Centrica declined ...
