The FTSE 100 Index closed down 64.10 points, or 1.1%, to 5,972 points today led by financial companies in anticipation of another hike in US interest rates tomorrow night.
Amvescap fell 2.20% to 555p and Schroders dropped 2.74% to 1,208p. Miners were also lower despite copper and zinc prices climbing again, with Antofagasta dropping 1.71% to 2,069p. Meanwhile, Alliance & Leicester gained 0.86% to 1,168p as bid speculation continued to buoy the lender. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has slumped 23.21 points, or 0.2%, to 11,256.76 points led by energy shares as the price of oil declines.
