FTSE buoyed by Rio Tinto

London's benchmark FTSE index capped a good day today led by Cable & Wireless and Rio Tinto, closing up 16.80 points at 4,734.50.

C&W increased 7p, or 6.39% to 116.50p, after reporting profitability for the first time in three years. Rio Tinto, the mining group, was up 49p to 1,528p at close after announcing it is selling its 51% stake in a Brazilian gold mine to Canada’s Kinross Gold Corp for $260m. Imperial Chemical Industries added 7.5p to 224.75p. Scottish Power led the fallers shedding 26.25p to 404.75p. The energy provider lost 6%, its biggest fall in almost two and a half years, after announcing that its US operation will miss profit estimates. Natural gas firm, BG Group shed 9p to 347p.
