FTSE defies Friday's Wall Street slump

London markets opened better than expected this morning allaying fears stocks could follow another Wall Street slump on Friday. The FTSE100 is currently 18.10 points (0.33%) ahead to 5548.00.

Interdealer broker ICAP has started the best of the blue chips so far, up 1.79% to 539. Miners are in demand again, with Xstrata 1.65% higher to 3999 and Rio Tinto 1.37% ahead to 65. ITV is leading the losses so far, falling 3.58% to 45.80; while record oil prices are continuing to dent British Airways, down 1.76% to 209.25. Banks however are following their American counterparts lower, with RBS down 1.61% to 214.25 and Barclays 1.59% behind to 293.25.
