US payroll pains pound FTSE

An unexpected drop in US payrolls last month has rocked Wall Street and showered the FTSE with late losses this afternoon.

The index closed the week 122.1 points down, or 1.93%, to 6191.2. Yet again the financials took a battering due to credit market concerns, with Old Mutual leading the losses, 8.1 points lower, or 5.25%, to 146.2. British Land and British Airways struggled as well, dropping 5.03% to 1226 and 4.96% to 397.25 respectively. Sage Group consolidated on its strong morning to post the day’s best result; the business management software supplier closed 4.25 points up, or 1.78 %, to 243. BAE Systems was the only other stock to post any sort of solid gain, up 1% on news it clinched a £20bn dea...
