The FTSE 100 Index fell 52.90 points, or 0.9%, to 5,718 points today, led by falling metal prices.
Vedanta slipped 4.15% to 1,248p, Antofagasta fell 4.65% to 390p and Lonmin dropped 2.19% to 2,720p. Gold futures fell about $10 to $620 an ounce overnight, while silver and copper also slipped. Barclays fell 1.89% to 597p despite revealing it has escaped a possible billion dollar fine, saying claims against it in the Enron case have been dismissed by a US court. HSBC declined 0.99% to 946.50p. It has agreed a friendly $1.77bn takeover of Panama's Grupo Banistmo, the biggest banking group in Central America, boosting its presence in Latin America.
