In London, markets made a small recovery after last week's poor trading, and the FTSE 100 climbed 46.4 points (0.83%) to 5,667.2.
Invensys shares added 17 points (6.04%) to 298.25p, while Shire followed with a gain of 45.5 points (5.71%) to 842.5p. Land Securities shares fared badly after continued problems in the UK property markets, down 64p (4.78%) to £12.75, while HBOS lost 12 points (4.25%) to 270.25. Wall Street markets fell by mid-morning, with the Dow Jones down 21.25 (0.18%) to 11,821.44. Exxon Mobil shares grew as oil prices continued to rise, up 1.91 (2.25%) to $86.82, while Merck added 0.59 (1.68%) to $35.72.
