Financials limit FTSE losses

The FTSE 100 has ended the day down 57.5 points, or 0.94%, to 6,058.7, as banks and insurers clawed back earlier losses which saw the index drop around 120 points.

Royal & Sun Alliance posted the biggest gains with a rise of 3.88% to 154p, as it completed the sale of its US assets, while HSBC advanced 1.13% to 896p, after announcing record profits. Capita Group also climbed 0.47% to 646.5p, while Resolution added 0.41% to 615.5p, and Royal Bank of Scotland climbed 0.24% to £20.81, although Next slipped 3.04% to £20.06. However British Airways was the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 6.59% to 496.5p, over fears of industrial action by pilots, while Lonmin dropped 3.14% to £29.66, Vedanta Resources slipped 3.05% to £11.78, and Smiths Group...
