FTSE gets a power surge

The FTSE 100 index rose 79.80 points, or 1.3%, to 6,138 points today, led by International Power after it posted a 20% jump in fourth-quarter net income.

International Power, the company which owns power stations in 17 countries, advanced 6.88% percent to £3.76 after posting a 20% jump in fourth-quarter net income to £124m. Xstrata gained 3% to £24 after it posted a 14% gain in full-year profit to a record $1.95bn on a consolidated basis after metal prices surged. BHP Billiton rallied 2.75% to £10.10, Rio Tinto advanced 1.24% to £26.91 and Antofagasta added 2.02% to £4.54. Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group rallied 2.92% to £1.58 on speculation Sampo Oyj may make an offer for the UK's second-biggest non-life insurer. In the US, the ...
