The FTSE 100 index looked perilously close to falling under 6000 on a day dominated by the high oil prices, closing Wednesday down 155.6 points, or 2.5%, to 6070.9.
Northern Rock again led the losses as the troubled lender announced more low cost offers today, closing 12.2 points behind, or 12.58%, to 84.8. Daily Mail and General Trust fell to its lowest point in four and a half years as investors continued to be spooked on the news its chief executive will resign. It closed 51.5 points down, or 8.93%, to 525.5. Schroders was another financial to falter, finishing 107 points behind, or 7.54%, to 1313.
