An apparent loophole which may allow individuals to pass on money from their pensions without attracting an Inheritance Tax (IHT) charge is being investigated by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
Replying to a question by an IFA at a Scottish Equitable roadshow on pensions, Stewart Ritchie, director of pensions development, said the provider had received a statement from HMRC to say they were investigating the apparent loophole after another provider identified it last week. Patrick O’Brien, a spokesman for HMRC, has confirmed: "We are aware of the issue that has been raised and are looking very carefully at it.
