Miners strike a loss for FTSE

The FTSE 100 has started the week down as miners struck losses for the index, closing 54.9 points lower, or 0.83%, to 6540.9.

Kazakhmys led the losses after announcing its copper cathode production will be hit by the flood at its Zhezkazgan complex. It finished 94 points down, or 5.89%, to 1502. Vedanta Resources didn’t fare too much better, it dropped 94 points, or 4.31%, to 2086; while Xstrata was 3.25% down, to 3212, on lower commodity prices. Reports another two private equity firms are eyeing Northern Rock sent the lender up 14 points, or 8.83%, to 172.5.
