DWP will fight pension compensation claims - papers 14th Feb

PENSIONS campaigners were yesterday gearing up for battle as it emerged the government planned to fight recommendations it should pay compensation for lost pensions, reports The Times .

According to the paper, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, is expected to report at Easter the Government misled workers over the safety of their final-salary schemes, resulting in as many as 85,000 people losing their life savings. The compensation bill could come to more than £5bn, according to reports. But Whitehall sources yesterday cast doubt on this figure and were adamant, even if the report placed blame at the door of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), ministers would not automatically pay out in full.
