Ombudsman to investigate misleading advice allegations

The Parliamentary Ombudsman will launch an inquiry into allegations of misleading guidance issued by the FSA, DSS and DWP.

Allegations surround literature published in 1999 and updated in 2002 - which government departments describe as information rather than advice - had suggested occupational pension scheme benefits were "guaranteed" . Literature has since been reworded to describe defined benefit or final salary pension schemes as carrying employer 'promised' rather than the earlier description of 'guarantees'. However, pensions consultant Ros Altmann argues there may still be a case for compensation. An inquiry by Ann Abraham, parliamentary ombudsman, will begin after the Parliamentary summer reces...
