An early slide on Wall Street has pushed the FTSE 100 into negative territory today, it closed 40.20 points lower (0.62%), to 6416.70.
Overseas tensions are battering tourism stocks, with TUI Travel leading the losses, down 4.17% to 281.50. Cairn Energy also struggled, closing down 4% to 2951; while Whitbread declined on a poor day for pub and restaurant groups, down 3.57% to 1350. The reported takeover talks between Alliance & Leicester and Santander last month drove A&L to a substantial gain. The lender closed the day up 16.36% to 754.
