Miners drag FTSE lower

The FTSE 100 is down 27 points, or 0.42%, to 6,442.4, as a poor start for the mining sector is dragging the index lower.

BHP Billiton is the biggest loser with a fall of 1.83% to £11.24, closely followed by Vedanta Resources which is down 1.49% to £13.87, while Anglo American has dropped 1.34% to £26.46. Xstrata has also fallen 1.32% to £26.13, while British Land has dropped 1.22% to £14.59, although losses are being limited by Marks & Spencer Group which is up 1.28% to 750.5p. Scottish & Newcastle is posting the biggest gains with a rise of 4.61% to 612.5p, closely followed by ITV which has added 2.07% to 118.3p, while SABMiller has climbed 1.44% to £11.96, and Next has advanced 1.27% to £23.17.
