The FTSE fell 0.64%, or 39.8 points to 6140.7p this afternoon as Vedanta Resources fell 3.94%, or 81 points, to 1975p following its ban from mining in the Niyamgiri hills in Kalahandi, India.
Northern Rock gained 7.81%, or 8.6 points, climbing to 118.7p after Virgin boss Richard Branson defended his bid for the troubled bank, which includes plans to inject £1.3bn into the business. Barclays rose 5.43%, or 27 points, to 524p after it said it expects report a 4% earnings growth this year. In the US, Home Depot continued a miserable couple of days but didn’t prevent the FTSE climbing 183.87 points, or 1.44%, to 12,927.31c.
