Disgruntled Equitable Life policyholders fighting for compensation have succeeded in securing a European parliament committee hearing to look into their claims, the Guardian reports.
The paper says they hope the move could increase pressure on the UK government, which has rejected calls to compensate victims of Equitable's near-collapse. Emag, the Equitable Members' Action Group, last year submitted a petition accusing the government of being negligent in its regulation of the scandal-hit life insurer. The petition was filed in the European parliament in December, and its petitions committee has now decided to invite all the main parties - including the insurer, the government and the parliamentary ombudsman - to a hearing on September 12.
