FTSE hits new five-year high

The FTSE 100 has ended the day up 32.1 points, or 0.52%, to 6,214.6 to hit a new five and half year high.

Tate & Lyle posted the biggest gains with a rise of 3.76% to 801p, after it said it was considering the full or partial disposal of its European starch operations, while Gallaher Group gained 3.15% to 884.5p. Miner Vedanta Resources has climbed 3.47% to £14.32, while British American Tobacco gained 2.49% to £14.82, and Wolseley added 2.15% to £12.38, although gains were limited by British Sky broadcasting which slipped 1.89% to 545.5p. Amvescap was the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 4.32% to 598p, after posting its third quarter results, while insurers also slumped led by Frie...
