Friends Provident rose 8.3 points, or 5.2%, to 167.8p. HSBC Holdings rose 37 points, or 4.39%, to 879.5p. BP rose 23 points, or 3.95%, to 606p. Sainsbury fell 12.75 points, or 2.99%, to 192.7p despite reporting a 20% rise in profits in its interim results. Vodafone fell three points, or 1.53%, to 192.7p.
