Expat employee numbers double

The number of expatriate employees on international assignments has doubled over the last three years due to globalisation trends, according to Mercer.

According to the firm’s 2008/2009 Benefits Survey for Expatriates and Globally Mobile Employees, 47% of companies said they have increased the deployment of traditional expatriates (employees on one to five-year assignments,) while 38% reported an increase in ‘global nomads’ (employees who continuously move from country to country on global assignments). The survey, conducted every three years, covers 243 multinational companies worldwide, employing over 94,000 expatriates, and is designed to provide an overview of expatriate policies in large multinational firms.
