Offshore savers who decline to declare any tax irregularities could be vilified like MPs falsely claiming expenses, as the Government prepares to name-and-shame tax evaders in a new initiative announced in the Budget, according to PKF Accountants & business advisers.
Just as the expenses scandal has been the death knell for many politicians' careers, embarrassing revelations about offshore savers dodging tax could not only be embarrassing but damage careers prospects, says John Cassidy, tax investigations partner at the firm. Alistair Darling announced HMRC will publish the details of anyone who has deliberately understated more then £25,000 of tax.
