Having forged a career in the civil service, it might have seemed an odd career move for Stephen Haddrill to decide to leave the comfort of the public sector to accept a position as the director general of the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Recruited directly out of university into the Department of Energy, Haddrill has spent over 25 years working in various branches of government, most recently as director general of the Fair Markets Group at the Department of Trade and Industry.
