Life company analyst Ned Cazalet's latest solvency figures for the industry show an increasing number are facing financial difficulties.
Among those with third quartile ratings are Friends Provident, National Mutual and Royal & SunAlliance. Cazalet said any groups in the fourth quartile were 'financially challenged', among those are Equitable, Sun Alliance & London and Alba. Among those in the top quartile are Standard Life, Clerical Medical, Prudential and Norwich Union.
The ratings are calculated using a combination of the proportion of the excess funds after all liabilities had been met and an assessment of management of the company's funds and its position in regard to any parent company.
