In my callow youth in the last millennium, I remember a cartoon that showed a man with string tied around one of his teeth with the other end tied to a door. The idea was that, when the door was slammed, the tooth would be yanked out, thus saving on dentistry fees. Today, a statistically insignificant number of people would revert to such do-it-yourself forms of pain infliction.
