Nick Marshall, manager of the Smith & Williamson Endurance Balanced fund, explains how he is positioning his portfolio for what could be a volatile second half of the year.

The first two months of 2012 provided a strong start to the year for the Mixed Investment 40-85% Shares sector. Sadly, this optimism proved short-lived and the majority of gains have now been eroded. All eyes are on macro news coming out of the US, the scale of the Chinese slowdown and the continuing eurozone crisis. The US has been positive for the most part, suggesting it will be able to avoid double-dipping while news out of China has been mixed.
