Stock picking momentum moves to newsflow

Momentum of newsflow is likely to drive 2004 trading in the UK equity markets, even though stocks still look expensive, says Stuart Fowler, manager of the Axa UK Opportunities fund.

  After the market turned in the spring of last year, I found it possible to find a fair number of companies whose shares were not priced as if their profits would never recover. I tried to identify these companies by looking for stocks with low price-to-sales ratios. When I last looked at stock-picking options, I quoted Cookson – a company which makes materials used in the production of printed circuit boards as one of my favourite stocks at that time.
