'Shocking surge' in retirement income revealed by Royal London analysis

Analysis of newly published government data by Royal London has revealed what director of policy Steve Webb described as "a shocking surge" in the gap between men and women's living standards in retirement.

According to the mutual insurer, in 2006/07, the average retired single woman had a gross income of £294 a week and her male counterpart on £325 - a gap of £31 a week. By 2016/17, however, the gap had nearly trebled to £85, with the average woman now on £316 a week and the average man on £401. Women's incomes have risen by 7% in real terms over the period compared with an increase of 23% for men, Webb added.
