Financial advisers have - so far - been successful in seeing off all competition in the market, despite the best attempts of direct sales forces, banks and regulation, says John Cowan.

In the eyes of the Sesame Bankhall Group executive chairman, that represents a particularly good result considering how the mortgage advice market is fairing in comparison. "If you take the advice community and look at it as I do - in two camps - the investment camp is absolutely riding supreme and completely in control of the advice market," he says. "In contrast, if you look across at the mortgage market - the top 10 lenders - probably 75% of all mortgages done in the country are controlled by brokers through intermediaries."
