When it comes to divorce, pensions can often be overlooked when coming to a settlement in the distribution of marital assets. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) data released last year showed a 9.6% increase in the number of divorces granted in England and Wales in 2021 (113,505) compared with 2020 (103,592). However, the ONS data does acknowledge that the number of divorces granted during 2020, and therefore the pandemic, may skew the data slightly due in part to processing delays for applications.
