The uncertainty of certainty

A few weeks ago, my six year old granddaughter's kitten was killed on a main road and as my garden is significantly larger than her family's, I was asked to bury it.

Being a good grandfather I duly did as I was told, dug a large whole at the bottom of the garden, buried the kitten and planted a rose on top to deter nosey foxes! This set me thinking about the impact of death in a wider sense and in particular in relation to members of member-directed pension schemes. It has always struck me as something of a contradiction that whilst, after birth, death is the only certainty, its timing is totally uncertain.
