With the inheritance tax (IHT) changes affecting pensions now just six months away, advisers are turning their attention to how the new regime will work in practice - and whether the Autumn Budget will provide further clarity.

From April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits will be brought within the scope of IHT. The change represents a significant shift in the role pensions can play in estate planning, particularly for clients with substantial pension wealth or self-invested pensions holding illiquid assets. Charles Russell Speechlys private client partner Harriet Betteridge said the six-month countdown meant attention was now shifting towards the practical operation of the new regime.
