Financial advisers should document inheritance tax (IHT) conversations with clients who ultimately decide not to act on liabilities, PA360 North delegates heard.
Speaking at Professional Adviser's PA360 North conference yesterday (1 October), Triple Point senior business development Manager Lucy Dolan said advisers could face questions from beneficiaries in the future if clients were aware of a potential IHT liability but chose not to address it. "If the client decides not to do anything about your liability, document it," Dolan told advisers. She warned that beneficiaries could later ask why an IHT bill had arisen when the deceased had been working with a financial planner.
