Investment trusts lose ground to ETFs as ownership drops to lowest level in five years

Fewer than 10% of investors own shares in an investment trust, with the sector losing ground to ETFs in a growing UK DIY investing market.

According to Boring Money's Investment Trust Report 2026, trust ownership has dropped from 12% to 9% in the past year alone, marking its lowest level since the research house began tracking adoption in 2021. The decline in ownership was most stark among 35 to 54-year-olds, where adoption has dropped from 12% to 7% – a fall of more than 40%. Investment trust ownership among under-35s, however, increased from 7% to 9% in a "glimmer of hope" for the sector.
