Burnham U-turns on income tax allowance increase suggestion – reports

Any change would be ‘difficult given the financial circumstances’

Prime minister Andy Burnham has pulled back from his previous suggestions about increasing the tax-free personal allowance after noting the “difficult” financial circumstances the government finds itself in, reports have suggested.

The £12,570 income tax personal allowance threshold has been frozen since 2021. Former chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled at her last Autumn Budget that the personal income tax threshold will be extended until 2030/31. Recently appointed prime minister Burnham previously told The Times over the weekend that the "frustration about the personal allowance" he had heard while campaigning in the Makerfield by-election was "lodged in my mind".
