Govt rebuffs Treasury Committee call for major tax relief review

Wide-ranging review not ‘effective use of limited resources’

The government has ruled out a wide-ranging review of current tax reliefs as recommended by MPs on the Treasury Committee.

The committee, chaired by Harriett Baldwin, proposed a full review of UK tax reliefs in a bid to uncover potential ways to simplify the system. However, the government's response from financial secretary to the Treasury Victoria Atkins ruled out any such review, saying the government was monitoring the situation. She said: "Whilst agreeing with the committee's intentions, I am of the view that this ongoing activity already delivers the majority of the committee's desired outcomes and that going further in the manner suggested would not always be the best use of resource and also have ...
