The British Medical Association (BMA) has warned chancellor Philip Hammond to reform the NHS pension scheme rules or doctors will reduce their working hours.

Lifetime and annual allowance rules are a particular problem with NHS staff, where large numbers of high-earning consultants and doctors are long-serving members of the defined benefit NHS Pension Scheme. In particular, the tapered annual allowance, which limits restricts the annual allowance of those earning over £150,000 is particularly problematic. The limits have landed some consultants with huge tax bills and resulted in 3,500 doctors retiring early since 2016, with many others avoiding taking on additional work.
