"Overall, on a scale of one to 10, how satisfied are you with life as a whole these days?" asked the chairman of the improbably-sized investment company Prandeamus Asset Management when I dropped by his office last week.

"Oh, I can't really complain," I shrugged. "And, even if I did, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do me any good. Call it a six and a half?" "What are you on about?" snapped the chairman. "You kindly asked me about life," I replied, taken aback. "And since you so rarely bother to ask, I thought I'd answer." "I wasn't talking to you," sighed the chairman, rolling his eyes.
