Julianne Moore stars in blockbuster movie on same-sex pension rights

Julianne Moore has taken on the role of a US police officer who fought for equal pension rights for same-sex couples in a Hollywood blockbuster due to be released later this year.

Inspired by true events, ‘Freeheld' depicts the struggle of the late Laurel Hester who campaigned vigorously in the Ocean County region of New Jersey to ensure her partner Stacie Andree received a spouses' pension upon her death. The pair entered into a domestic partnership in 2004 before Hester was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Under the law of the state, only spouses of police officers and firefighters were entitled to death benefits.
