Prudential fined for 'farcical' merging of customer accounts

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has fined Prudential £50,000 for a "farcical" mix-up where two clients with identical names had their accounts merged.

The error was caused when the records of both customers, who share the same first name, surname and date of birth, were mistakenly merged in March 2007. Tens of thousands of pounds meant for one client's account actually ended up in the other's - a mistake that remained unrectified for more than three years. Stephen Eckersley, ICO head of enforcement, said the case would be "farcical, were it not for the serious sums of money involved."
