Tory treasurer: Make UK more like tax haven

A Conservative Party treasurer has called on the government to compete with offshore tax havens by easing the tax burden on wealthy foreigners who invest in hedge funds.

Lord Fink believes UK investment firms are drawn to places such as the Cayman Islands because they tax wealthy foreign investors at much lower rates than in Britain. In an interview with the Guardian, he said he had previously lobbied George Osborne to change the UK tax rules under which gains investors make on hedge funds are taxed to income rather than capital. "I lobbied George Osborne when the Tories were in opposition," he said.
