Fifth see pensions as 'risky'

Almost 20% of people do not believe pensions are a safe investment although more than half say they are 'vital' for retirement, research by Defaqto suggests.

Whilst 53% of people feel pensions are an important financial asset in retirement, only 40% are saving for later life and one fifth are not saving anything at all. Respondents to Defaqto's survey say pensions are not a safe investment (19%) and are too inflexible as they cannot access their money in the short term (14%). Over half of respondents say they would save more for retirement if they had more of a guaranteed return, and 40% say better tax incentives would convince them to save.
