HMRC security drive creates £3bn rebate delays

Around 15 million people are facing long delays on their tax rebates as a result of HMRC revamping its security system.

Many people have been asked repeatedly for new personal details before they can claim refunds, compounding problems caused earlier this year when HMRC sent out thousands of incorrect tax codes, according to the Daily Mail. A report from the National Audit Office claimed around £3bn in tax rebates is caught in the delay, affecting 15.4 million people and leaving 18 million unresolved tax records.
