Afternoon Markets: Dow breaches 11,000 on Greece rescue

The Dow Jones opened above 11,000 for the first time since September 2008 as investor confidence surged on the back of an agreement to provide a loan package for Greece.

US shares continued their strong showing from Friday, when the Dow hit the 11,000 milestone for the first time since September 2008. Investors are focusing on a 30bn euro loan package for Greece agreed by eurozone countries on Sunday. As at 1600 GMT, the blue-chip index was up 0.21%, or 23 points, to 11,020 points. Aluminium producer Alcoa is up 2.2% ahead of an expected positive earnings report and General Electric (up 1.68%) and Caterpillar (up 2.24%) are amongst the day's top performers.
