Dow gains on Chrysler ruling

The Dow Jones shot up on opening today, following the news Chrysler has staved off bankruptcy.

The index rose 0.8% to 8,835 points early, after a US federal bankruptcy judge yesterday approved the auto giant's plans to balance its books by closing a quarter of its showrooms. It later fell back 0.25% to 8,814. Bank Citigroup, miner Alcoa and retailer Home Depot were the fastest rising stocks at 3.32% to US$3.52, 2.51% to $11.43 and 2.18% to $24.88 respectively. The FTSE 100 fell nearly 1% to 4,461, from a midday high of 4,506. Travel agents Thomas Cook was the biggest loser, falling 6.79% to 219.75p, followed by BAE systems, down 2.27% to 322.75p.
