STANDARD Life is urging the government not to overrule changes made to National Insurance contributions by the House of Lords as they could be detrimental to women's pensions planning.
Last week the House of Lords made changes to the way Class 3 National Insurance contributions work, against the original wishes of the government. The changes, which have been inserted into the Pensions Bill, will, according to Standard Life particularly benefit women. The proposals, suggested by Baroness Hollis, went to a vote and the government was defeated by 179 to 86. Class 3 NI contributions are voluntary contributions that can be paid by people who have not worked for a long enough period to qualify for a full basic state pension.
