New markets top developed

COUNTRY specific emerging markets have outperformed developed markets every year for the last decade, according to research from Fidelity.

The fund manager found a different emerging country has topped the performance tables – based on MSCI indices – every year between 1996 and 2005. Turkey’s growth in 1999 of 263.8pc was far and away the best performance shown by any market. In 2005, the data showed Egypt delivered the best growth, 192.5pc. Last year the best-performing developed market was Canada, returning 44.1pc. And in the same year Turkey returned more than 260pc, the best developed market was Finland, returning 161pc.
