Health beats finance as top retirement trigger

POOR health - not financial security - is the main trigger for retirement, according to research published by Skandia.

While 50pc of the survey respondents claimed ill health had prompted them to retire, only 3pc retired because they could afford to do so. 84pc of those surveyed retired before reaching the state retirement age, but 46pc had not retired out of choice. Almost a fifth (19pc) of respondents had tired of working, 10pc had received an early retirement package, 8pc had been made redundant and only 7pc had retired because they had reached state pension age.
