DTI to ban forced retirement

Final regulations to outlaw age discrimination in the workplace have been published and laid before parliament by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations will need the approval of both Houses of Parliament and the DTI anticipates the necessary debate will be held before the end of March while, subject to approval, the rules will come into force on 1 October. They will apply to employment and vocational training and will prohibit unjustified direct and indirect age discrimination, and all harassment and victimisation on grounds of age of people both young or old.
