FTSE falls as miners fizzle out

The FTSE 100 Index dropped 14.20 points, or 0.3%, to 5,657 points today after an earlier rally in the mining sector fizzled out.

Antofagasta fell 2.53% to 2,039p, Rio Tinto dropped 1.85% to 2,762p and BHP Billiton declined 2.50% to 1,013p. Gas giant Centrica was down 1.76% at 264.75p after a tough start to the year and its indication group earnings for the full year will be be towards the lower end of market expectations. British Airways helped to limit losses after it posted a 21% hike in full year pre-tax profit to £620m on higher fares and fuller planes. Its shares gained 9.14% to 349.25p. Steel group Corus rose 1.67% to 379.75p as Mittal raised its offer for Arcelor by 25%, while broker Deutsche Bank said "...
